Background of the study:
In Abakaliki, indigenous treatments for typhoid fever have been a cornerstone of local healthcare practices for generations. These treatments, which involve a range of herbal remedies and ritualistic procedures, are deeply rooted in cultural traditions (Chima, 2023; Nwosu, 2024). Many community members rely on indigenous methods due to limited access to modern healthcare facilities and economic constraints. Recent studies suggest that while some indigenous treatments show potential in symptom relief, their efficacy and safety remain underexplored (Onyekachi, 2023). The continued use of these treatments highlights the need for a thorough evaluation to determine their therapeutic value and to explore potential integrations with conventional medicine. This evaluation will contribute to understanding the role of indigenous medicine in managing infectious diseases, thereby supporting culturally informed health interventions (Chima, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Typhoid fever remains a serious public health issue in Abakaliki, where indigenous treatments are commonly used despite limited scientific validation. This lack of rigorous evaluation poses risks to patient safety and undermines efforts to optimize disease management. Clarifying the efficacy of these treatments is essential (Nwosu, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness of indigenous treatments for typhoid fever.
  2. To document the specific indigenous remedies used.
  3. To recommend integration with conventional treatment protocols.

Research questions:

  1. How effective are indigenous treatments for typhoid fever?
  2. What are the common remedies used in Abakaliki?
  3. How can these indigenous practices be integrated with modern medicine?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Indigenous treatments significantly alleviate typhoid fever symptoms.
  2. Specific remedies show measurable therapeutic effects.
  3. Integrative approaches will enhance patient outcomes.

Significance of the study:
This study will provide critical insights into the efficacy of indigenous treatments for typhoid fever, potentially guiding healthcare policy and fostering safe integration with conventional treatments to improve public health outcomes (Onyekachi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to indigenous treatments for typhoid fever in Abakaliki Local Government. It does not include other diseases or geographical areas.

Definitions of terms:

  • Indigenous treatments: Traditional remedies and practices passed down culturally.
  • Typhoid fever: A bacterial infection characterized by high fever and gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • Therapeutic effectiveness: The degree to which a treatment achieves its intended health outcome.
